Hardware Accelerated XSLT Using the Layer 7 SecureSpan XML Accelerator

The Problem: Slow XSLT & XML Transformation

For enterprises using XML for data encoding or messaging to XML based RESP and SOAP APIs, data transformation can be an expensive bottleneck. For scenarios requiring large volumes of data to be transformed or for the data to be transformed at high speeds the cost and latency attached to running XSL transformations inside an application can be prohibitive. It can slow the application down reducing responsiveness and raise the licensing costs for the application by requiring additional CPUs to support the extra processing. An increasingly popular alternative has therefore been to offload expensive XML transformation to a purpose built co-processor that can process large volumes of XML data at high speeds without slowing application performance.  

 

Solution: Hardware-Based XSLT Accelerators

XSL based transforms on XML require considerable processing power. By offloading XML transforms or XSLTs to specialized hardware, applications can be freed to process business logic. Only two vendors offer specialized XSLT processing in hardware, Layer 7 being one. Using any of the Layer 7 XML Gateway appliances, customers can offload XSLT processing to special purpose silicon. This can be configured either inline to the message / data stream or as a service endpoint to an ESB, app server or data repository. Using the SecureSpan Gateway's Policy Manager, XSLT's can be defined or imported from external source and used for mapping between XML schemas. For customers needing only XSLT acceleration without the attendant security, SLA and mediation policies, the SecureSpan XML Accelerator can be implemented as a low cost entry level product for speeding XML transforms.
