Ogilvy & Mather - Web Services Security

Connecting clients worldwide through secure Web services

Connecting clients worldwide through secure Web services

Founded in 1948, Ogilvy & Mather is a leading advertising, marketing and public relations firm. Ogilvy has 498 offices in 162 countries. Having creative professionals dispersed over an international organization of this size poses significant IT challenges – particularly as it is often necessary to move extremely large media files rapidly and securely between locations.

The Business Challenge
Ogilvy had been building custom Web applications to give staff, partners and customers access to collaborative functionality. The company identified Web services as a means to make the creation of new apps more efficient by facilitating the re-use of application functionality. However, the adoption of Web services created new concerns around identity-based access.

The Solution
Layer 7’s SecureSpan XML Gateway and VPN Client were used to create an identity-enabled Web services solution. These products were deployed at various client locations, providing immediate, secure access to Web services, with no coding required. Cases where the client had an existing identity solution were accommodated using the SecureSpan SOA Gateway.

The Results
Layer 7’s SecureSpan product family forms the security backbone of Ogilvy’s client interaction strategy and internal systems. SecureSpan has allowed Ogilvy to be quick to market with a Web services-based infrastructure for creating applications in a scalable and secure manner. It has also significantly simplified Sarbanes-Oxley compliance for the company.
